Wireless Setup for Windows XP

Connect Using Windows XP

Step 1

You will need a wireless card that supports WPA2 personal. This compatibility tool lists a great deal of compatible wireless cards, but is not a definitive listing. You can get more information by contacting your computer's manufacturer.

Step 2

Ensure that you have the latest drivers from your wireless card vendor. You may need to visit their website or call them to determine this information. If you do not have the most recent drivers, you will need to install them.

Step 3

Check that you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2:

1. Click on Start > Right click on My Computer > Go to Properties

2. In the "General" tab, under System, it will say "Microsoft Windows XP", followed by other data, including either "Service Pack 1" or "Service Pack 2".

3. If you do not see "Service Pack 2", you will need to update to SP2 - visit http://update.microsoft.com/ for more information.

Step 4

You will also need the WPA2 hotfix from Microsoft (KB893357). You can download and install the WPA2 hotfix.

Please note that this page will require you to go through the Microsoft Genuine Advantage process before being able to download the hotfix.

*note* you will also need to ensure that Windows is managing your wireless card, it may be as simple as right-clicking on your wireless icon in the taskbar and choosing, “let windows manage wifi.”

Step 5

Once you have verified that your hardware and software are capable of the wireless network go the start menu, then the “connect to” section and click on “Wireless Network Connection.”

Step 6

Click on the button that says, “View Wireless Networks.”

Step 7

In this area, click on the section in the bottom left of the window that reads, “Change advanced settings.”

Step 8

Create a new network with the SSID, “students,” network authentication, “WPA2,” and Data Encryption, “AES.”


Step 9

Go to the authentication page and choose “PEAP” on the drop down menu and ensure that both check boxes are unchecked.


Step 10

Click the properties button under the “PEAP” selection and uncheck the “Validate Server Certificate,” use the drop down menu and select “secured password” and check the “enable fast reconnect” checkbox.

Step 11

Click on the “Configure” button next to the secured password drop down menu and make sure the check box in the new window is unchecked.

Step 12

Go to the “Connection” tab of the students properties window and check the box, “Connect when the network is in range.”

Step 13

Back at the initial wireless connection screen ensure that the “students” network is at the top of the list and press O.K.

Step 14

Click on the balloon that pops up on the bottom to enter your username and password.

Step 15

In this window enter your username and password from your elearning email account. Your username will be your first and middle initials followed by your last name (ie. FMLast) and your password by default is your student ID number.

Step 16

Once you have entered your username and password you should be able to browse the internet successfully. Congratulations!
