Degree Overview

The School of Church Music offers a variety of degrees for students with a wide range of training and experience in music. Whether your musical background is limited or extensive, Southwestern has a degree program that will help prepare you as you respond to God’s call to ministry. 

Bachelor of Arts in Music (new)

The new Bachelor of Arts in Music is an accredited liberal arts degree which is offered in conjunction with the College at Southwestern. Three concentrations are available: worship, performance, and composition.

Master's Degrees

Two master’s degrees (M.M., M.A.W.) are available to those with a bachelor’s degree in music, and one master’s degree (M.A.C.M.) is structured for those with a bachelor’s in an area other than music. 

Ph.D. and D.M.A.

The Ph.D. and D.M.A. are designed to bring the student to the highest level of skill and development in creative scholarship and performance.  The Ph.D. in Church Music is offered in the areas of music ministry, music theory and musicology. The D.M.A. in Church Music is offered in composition, conducting, organ, piano, piano pedagogy/literature, voice and voice pedagogy/literature.

Christian Education Minor

A Christian Education Minor can be added to any one of the three master's degree (M.M., M.A.W., M.A.C.M.) offered by the School of Church Music.

Other Degrees

Two degrees are offered in conjunction with other schools at Southwestern: the Master of Divinity with a Concentration in Church Music is offered by the School of Theology, and the Master of Arts in Christian Education with a Church Music Minor is offered by the School of Church and Family Ministries.
