Level 1 Certification in Biblical Counseling

The three classes required for Level 1 will be offered in the spring 2010 semester on January 22-23, February 19-20, March 26-27, 2010. The cost for all three classes is $250, which includes course materials and refreshment breaks. Classes will meet Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Level 1 must be completed before taking level 2 classes.

1. The Theological Basis for Biblical Counseling

This foundational class offers an overview of the basic biblical doctrines of the Christian faith, along with their application to ministry. Specific areas of study include:

  • Inspiration and Authority of Scripture
  • Attributes of God
  • Doctrine of Man
  • Christ and Salvation
  • The Holy Spirit
  • The Church

2. Introduction to Biblical Counseling

The second class of Level 1 asks the question: "Why not Biblical Counseling?" Students are provided a Scriptural foundation for the use of biblical intervention as a means of teaching, discipleship, counseling, restoration, and evangelism. Specific areas of study include:

  • The Law of the Lord: Psalm 19 and 119
  • Avoid Man’s Wisdom: Psalm 1:1-2; 1 Corinthians 1-3, Colossians 2:8
  • All We Need: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and 2 Peter 1:3
  • Study the Word: 2 Timothy 2:15
  • Able to Admonish: Romans 15:14; 1 Thess. 5:12-14; 2 Thess. 3:15
  • Counsel Ephesians
  • Counsel 1 Corinthians
  • The Great Commandment and Biblical Counseling

3. The Process of Biblical Counseling
 

The third class of Level 1 addresses the beginning process of counseling, especially as it relates to the counselor's own life and the relationship with the counselee. Specific areas of study include:.

  • What about unbelievers? – Evangelism - 1 Corinthians 2:14
  • The Counselor/Counselee Relationship: Fellow Struggler or Professional
  • Developing and Exhibiting Empathy
  • “Could I talk to you about something?” : The Importance and Power of Informal Counsel
  • Instilling Hope in the Counselee
  • Get the Log Out of Your Own Eye: Self-Confrontation in Biblical Counseling
  • Put On –Put Off – The Process of Biblical Change
