H. Gerald Aultman
Professor of Music Theory, Dick Baker Chair of Music Missions and Evangelism and Chapel Organist
817-923-1921 ext.6270
Dr. Aultman's primary interests lie in the areas of music theory, keyboard performance, and teaching. One of his greatest joys is that of finding ways to communicate basic theoretical concepts to students, then seeing them understand and master those concepts. Harmony, form and analysis, and counterpoint are among his favorite subject areas to teach. Dr. Aultman is active as a performer on both the piano and organ. In addition to his duties at Southwestern, he currently serves as organist at the First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, which provides for him many avenues for performance and ministry at the keyboard. His arrangements for piano, organ, and piano/organ duet have appeared in several publications from LifeWay. He is often called upon to serve as keyboard clinician for national conferences for Southern Baptists at their Ridgecrest and Glorieta conference centers, and as an adjudicator for piano festivals. As curator of the large pipe organ at First Baptist Church, he has developed a keen interest in organ building and design.
Dr. Aultman holds degrees in piano performance (B.M., Mississippi College, 1976), church music (M.C.M., New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 1978), and music education (Ph.D., Louisiana State University, 1983). In 1995 he was named as Mississippi College’s outstanding music alumnus. He has also studied at Teachers College, Columbia University, under Robert Pace (piano pedagogy) and has studied organ with John Schuder at the Interchurch Center, New York. He is a member of the Music Teachers National Association, Texas Music Teachers Association, Fort Worth Music Teachers Association, Texas Music Educators Association, and the American Guild of Organists, from which he holds the “Associate” certification. Dr. Aultman and his wife, Carol (soprano), have performed extensively in sacred concerts throughout the Southern Baptist Convention. The Aultmans have two sons, Brandon and Eric, both of whom will be pursuing careers in music.
