Professor of Piano and Chair of the Piano Department

817-923-1921 ext.3200

Dr. Smith is a frequent performer of solo and ensemble literature, the latter most often in collaboration with his wife, soprano Lynda Poston-Smith.  They have given recitals together in Fulda and Munich, Germany; Croydon and London, England; and across the United States in some 42 different colleges and universities, seminaries, and piano teacher organizations.  Dr. Smith’s appearances with orchestra include performances of concerto movements with the Louisville and Lexington (Ky.) Symphony Orchestras, and a performance of Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy with Southwestern Seminary’s Oratorio Chorus and Orchestra.  He has produced a compact disc of Rachmaninoff’s Sonata in B-Flat Minor, Op. 36, made from a live performance.

Dr. Smith is a graduate of the University of Louisville (B.M.), The Juilliard School of Music (M.S.), and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (D.M.A.).  He has written articles for the Journal of the European Piano Teachers Association and the Journal of Creative Motion.  As a reviewer, he has contributed to the Journal of the American Liszt Society.  In 1981, he delivered a lecture to the Van Cliburn Foundation on the piano music of Schumann and Brahms that was to be performed in the International Van Cliburn Competition that year.  He is also a frequent clinician in workshops on the subject of “Creative Motion,” a performance technique that makes use of imagery and movement education.

As a member of Church of Christ the King Fort Worth, he has been a substitute organist and an occasional piano accompanist. As a collaborative pianist, he accompanied for the Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Master Class at Texas Tech University, and participated in Faculty Trio concerts at Southwestern.
