A study of the ministry of education in the local church and the work of the staff member assigned to lead this ministry, historically called the Minister of Education and the work of the pastor. This course will focus on biblical principles and methods of developing small group ministries in the local church, including what has been called Sunday School. The local church ministry of education will be placed in the context of sound theology and philosophy for Christian Education.

A study of what the Bible teaches about humanity, what it means to be created in the image of God, and mankind’s relationship to God. God’s understanding of personal chronological and spiritual growth, the biblical definition of maturity for a man or woman, and God’s expectations of His creation will be explored. Upon this study, the course will help the student to understand and to develop sound pedagogy for the local church.

A study will be made of the philosophy, audiences, and principles of effective student ministry as it relates to the functions of the church. The course is based upon the nine characteristics from scripture that help produce students who walk with God into adulthood. Consideration will be given to the work of other denominations and groups.

Through discussion, observation, interviews, research, and reading, a study will be made of the growth and development of teenagers to determine characteristics, problems, life situations, and moral/religious needs. The purpose of this course is to guide students in understanding and creatively relating to contemporary teenage issues in light of truths from God’s Word.
