Southwestern alumnus named chaplain of the year

FORT WORTH, Texas (SWBTS) – The Minority Chamber of Commerce (MCC) named Southwestern alumnus Guillermo Escalona “Chaplain of the Year 2012” at its annual Minority Gala Awards ceremony in Miami, Fla., Dec. 7. Guillermo, who serves as Director of Pastoral Education for Baptist Health South Florida, earned his Master of Divinity at Southwestern in 1987 and also currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Doug Mayorga, President of the MCC, described the distinguished honor associated with receiving the gala award and affirmed Escalona’s work in pointing those he minsters to, toward Christ.

“Chaplains are coming into the mainstream of patient care, as new research shows positive spiritual guidance and discussion can help improve a patient's medical outcome, and it’s a special award at the Minority Gala”, said Mayorga. “It really highlights the value of Pastor Escalona as he gently guides people toward the good and gracious God who is the greatest of all healers.”

The MCC describes the award Escalona received as “a prestigious national award presented annually to an active member, partner or collaborator of the MCC who demonstrates excellence, creativity and initiative in public and private services—civic, and professional.”
