Catholic journal prints essay from 'Southwestern Journal of Theology'

FORT WORTH, Texas (SWBTS) – The Roman Catholic journal, Omnis Terra, translated and published an essay from volume 49 of the Southwestern Journal of Theology earlier this spring. Omnis Terra published translations of the essay in Spanish, Portuguese, English, French and Italian.

The essay, titled “Will We Correct the Edinburgh Error? Future Mission in Historical Perspective,” was written by David J. Hesselgrave and is available online at www.baptisttheology.org/journal.cfm. In the essay, Hesselgrave, professor emeritus of missions at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, identifies the negative impact of the 1910 World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh.

“Hesselgrave’s essay … challenges missionaries and strategists to refocus their attention upon orthodox doctrine,” writes Malcolm Yarnell, editor of the Southwestern Journal of Theology. “A biblically based doctrinal seriousness once distinguished evangelicals, but in the rush to embrace ecumenism, it is being lost.” This essay, Yarnell adds, calls evangelicals to carefully examine “biblical theology and its practical implications.”
